LEX Professional Standards Ltd (IPS) is to recruit a new Chief Executive to lead the organisation as it takes on the task of regulating legal businesses in a rapidly changing legal sector. Current CEO, Ian Watson, will be standing down in spring 2015, having led the company from its formation in 2008 as the front line regulator for the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx).
During this time IPS has introduced a new Code of Conduct for CILEx members, work based learning criteria for admission as a Fellow and an outcomes-based approach to Continuing Professional Development. By the end of this year, IPS will have secured full independent practice rights for Chartered Legal Executives, enabling them to own and manage their own law firms.
Alan Kershaw, Chair of IPS, said “It was on the basis of Ian’s immense knowledge and experience that IPS was set up as the independent regulator for CILEx. The Board and I have drawn repeatedly on his expertise in taking forward our agenda, and the achievements of our first six years speak for themselves. We are ready now to embark on an entirely new period in the organisation’s development and I am delighted that Ian will be with us when we celebrate the granting of the first new practice rights to individuals and the regulation of businesses.”
CILEx President Frances Edwards added, "Ian has been and remains a great asset to CILEx through a career that has spanned nearly 40 years with us. Council has always been able to rely on his independence, objectivity and intellect. We agree with IPS how important it is for him to provide continuity as we transition into the next phase of IPS’s evolution."
